Re: thyroid and TB exposure for a I-131 medical treatment
The dose conversion factor for I-131 for thyroid is 6.3 (some say 6.4)
rads/microcurie for a euthyroid individual with 20% uptake. Hence for 22.9
mCi (a therapeutic dose) the total lifetime dose is about 150,000 rad
(actually 144.3 krad) to the thyroid. For a normal euthyroid individual,
the effective half life is about 7.5 days. For a hyperthyroid individual,
this could be smaller, and hence the dose to the tyroid would also be
smaller. Consult the MIRD publications for more detailed data.
