"Nuclear Criticality and the
Recent Japanese Accident"

It is reported in the newspapers that a nuclear criticality accident
occurred in Japan at 10:35 a.m. on 30 September 1999.  Two workers were
feeding fuel into processing equipment when it is believed that nuclear
criticality was reached.  Although the full details of the accident are not
known yet, this accident will be discussed together with nuclear criticality
accidents reported in the past.  Both the health physics and the reactor
physics aspects will be discussed.
