Re: Tooth fairy project

Newsweek.com printed the following info over the weekend. The article fails to
mention that there also seems to be a "cluster" of hazardous waste sites in
Suffolk County, New York. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry
(ATSDR) lists 185 hazardous waste sites in the State of New York, of which 23
sites are located in Suffolk County. This information is located at
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/haz-usa1.html

WEEKEND EDITION, October
                 23-24, 1999

                 'An Epidemic'

In a report to be released at
                 the end of the month,
                 scientists report a "cluster of
                 a very rare childhood cancer"
                 in Suffolk County, on Long
                 Island in New York. The
Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP), a
non-profit organization which studies the relationship
between low-level nuclear radiation and public health,
has been collecting baby teeth from 1979-1994 to
measure the levels of radioactive strontium (Sr90) in
New York and surrounding areas. Dr. Janette Sherman,
co-author of the report, told Newsweek.com that
researchers have found a "shockingly high" level of
rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare form of childhood cancer
that affects the skeletal muscle. Sr90 has been linked
with the cancer in laboratory rats.
