Dear Radsafers:
Thyroid cancer is increased in incidence in damaged thyroid glands. Common
causes of damage are Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Both are
chronic autoimmune diseases. I-131 is an unlikely cause of thyroid cancer,
despite perceptions otherwise.
