Decon Requirements

To all,

I am being questioned regarding the protective clothing requirements for
personnel decontamination of low-level rad mat (<100ccpm). This is at a
1000MWe nuclear power plant.

The scenario goes as follows:

The PCM alarms, usually on shoes. The HP tech checks the shoes with a
frisker, and determines that it is < 100 ccpm, but there is some trace
radioactivity. (40- 60 ccpm?)

By our procedures, the HP or the individual may clean his/her shoe, reenter
the PCM, and if it does not alarm the person may leave.

The question is whether the HP or individual should use protective clothing
(gloves) when cleaning the shoe. We do NOT require it, but I am being told
that we are not in step with the rest of the industry. We have had no
problems (i.e.cross-contamination) to date with this practice.

Please let me know, by radsafe or personal E-mail, what your accepted
practices are.

MY thoughts alone!!

Thanx in advance for your replies,
