Re:RE: CHP Part I Study Materials
I used Datachem's software to prepare for Part I in 1995 and 1997. I mistakenly
thought the first time I took Part I that studying using the software would be
sufficient; boy, was I wrong! What it did was lull me into a sense of
complacency that if I could spit out the right answers, I was going to pass. As
a result, I did not delve deeply enough into the material to really understand
the hows and whys. In 1997, taking the exam for the second time, I used the
software some, but mostly studied Gollnick, Moe (read Chapter 3 at least 3
times), Cember, and Turner, plus solved Chapter 1 problems from Bevelacqua.
That, combined with having the experience of having sat through the exam once,
resulted in success. The point is, the software should not be used without a
thorough understanding of the basic principles which are best gained from
reading the above books and solving the problems in them.

I and a co-worker used this type of software to help prepare for the Part 1
examination. We both agreed that there are subtle differences between the
questions asked by the program and the questions as they appear on the Part
1 examination with the end result that the Part 1 exam was much more
challenging than an equivalent number of questions from the program question
bank. I think an 80% rate on the data bank questions would be cutting it a
little thin.

I purchased a software program which I found to be a very
effective study tool for the part I exam. It contains around 800 questions,
similar to the type asked on the exam. It has features such as being able
to simulate a timed exam, remembering what types of questions you answer
wrong, etc. It gives the answers, and detailed explanations of solutions
for each question. It was useful because it gave me an idea of how much
more studying I needed to do. It keeps track of what percentage you are
able to answer correctly. When you are able to answer about 80% of them,
you are in good shape. It also gives you an idea of the areas you should
spend more time studying. It's not cheap at $360, but it was worth the
extra peace of mind. They were also offering a complete refund if you do
not pass the exam on the first try.
It is (or was) produced by Datachem Software. (508) 366-5277
I bought it in '97, so I'm not sure what the price is now.
Good luck! I found part I to be more difficult than part II. Make sure you
are familiar with NCRP, ICRP, 10 CFR, and BEIR recommendations (old and
new). There were many questions on them.

Colleagues,
I am seeking an up-to-date reference to use as a
comprehensive study
guide for Part I of the CHP exam. There is a wealth of
information out
there on preparing for Part II, but I have found no concise
reference
(cram exam) to use to study for Part I. Is there something
out there,
preferably on the web, similar to the study guides used for
the NRRPT?
Any response will be welcome. Please respond to
ixo@ornl.gov.
Thank you,
John E. Dixon, RRPT.
