Environmental Groups: Close Yankee Plant Cheaper - (BRATTLEBORO) -- 
Should the Yankee Nuclear power plant simply be shut down? That was 
the proposal put to a meeting of several Vermont consumer and 
environmental groups last week. The groups agreed that the cost of an 
upcoming sale of the plant to AmerGen Energy will be borne by 
consumers, and that it would be cheaper to just close the plant. The 
groups include the Vermont Public Interest Research Group and the New 
England Coalition Against Nuclear Pollution. They plan to work 
against approval of the sale when hearings begin this week before the 
state Public Service Department.
