NCC CHP Review Course

CHP Exam Review Course

NCCHPS will run a CHP exam review course in spring 2000.

The course is designed for Health Physicists who plan to take Part I and/or Part
II of the ABHP exam. Others may attend the course to study Health Physics.
Continuing Education Credit (CEUs) will be applied for from the ABHP.

The course will include 11 classes of three hours each. Topics to be covered in
the course are listed below. To the extent possible, lectures will be presented
by experts in the corresponding subject matter. Each class will include a
lecture, handout material for each student, problem solving by students and
instructors, and weekly reading and problem assignments. Short answer questions
similar to the ones in Part I of the ABHP exam will often be covered. Part II
questions from previous ABHP exams will be solved and reviewed. Test taking
techniques and recommended bibliography will be reviewed.

DATES/TIME: Class will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm, every other Thursday evening,
January 13 - June 1, 2000 (except that class will be held on Wednesday May 17th
instead of the 18th because of the NCCHPS meeting on the 18th).

LOCATION: Perseverance Hall, Bldg. 54, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
Berkeley CA. Directions and maps are available on the web at
http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Transportation.html.

BART: Beat the rush hour traffic by using BART!!! The Lab operates a shuttle
to and from the Berkeley BART station through 6:50 pm (see above web page).
Arrive in Berkeley by 5:30 to reach Perseverance Hall by 6:00. Rides will be
available from the Lab to BART after class.

GATE ACCESS / PARKING: Students registered in advance for the course need only
stop at the Blackberry Canyon entrance gate to Berkeley Lab to receive a parking
pass and directions to Perseverance Hall in Building 54 (the Dining Hall).

TEXT: The required text for the course will be Contemporary Health Physics
(1995) by Bevelacqua (available online, e.g. from bn.com). This text focuses on
health physics problem solving and will be used for homework assignments.

FEE: The student fee will be $100 for NCCHPS and SNHPS members, $195 for
nonmembers, to cover course expenses. Send checks payable to the NCCHPS to Dr.
Gary H. Zeman, CHP, MS 75B-127, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley
CA 94596. Checks must be received by January 7th.

REGISTRATION: Register to attend by e-mail to Dr. Gary Zeman, CHP at
ghzeman@lbl.gov no later than January 7, 2000.

REFERENCES: Other recommended reference books include those by Cember (1996),
Turner (1995), and Bevelacqua (1999). Publications of the NCRP, ICRP and ICRU
will be available in class and used as needed in problem solving.

Notes:

a. You must register for this course and send in a check even if you replied and
expressed interest in the earlier survey. Your response to the earlier survey
does not register you for the course.

b. Registering for this NCCHPS course does NOT register you for the ABHP exam.
You must take care of that yourself. And that also is due in January!
