Be sure to join us for the 14th annual meeting of the Council on
Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards (CIRMS) scheduled for
October 24 –26, 2005 at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Maryland. The meeting brings
together international experts on radiation protection, industrial
applications and materials effects, medical applications, homeland
security and other related areas. This year’s theme is New
technology developed to address advances and changes in commerce,
research and social concerns can generate the need for new radiation
measurement methods and standards. Conversely, new measurement
technologies can unlock new approaches to solving persistent
standards needs. This meeting will examine the interplay between
measurement needs and technology in areas such as materials for
radiation detection, devices generating or using radiation,
information on the effects of radiation and approaches being
considered to respond to radiological emergencies.

In late 2004, CIRMS issued its fourth Needs Report and many of the
Measurement Program Descriptions (MPD’s) deal with challenges
presented by new techniques for using radiation in medicine, with
protecting the public in case of a radiological emergency resulting
from a terrorist act, and with the expanding role of radiation use in
industrial and commercial applications. Renewed interest in extended
space travel has raised the issue of assessing dose from high energy,
heavy charged particles.
