Rick,
Richard Nixon was the one who launched the "War on
Cancer." Currently, we can do earlier detection,
genetic fingerprinting, and specfic therapies.  Unless
you start geneticially altering cells, my guess that
cancer will not be "cured."  

As for the radioactive waste being sent to Yucca
Mountain, decisions are based on politics as well as
science and economics.  My understanding is that
mining and processing new fuel is cheaper.
