Group Leader, Nuclear & Radiological Support Services
The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Group Leader for the Nuclear & Radiological Support Services (NRSS) Group. Located 20 miles from Knoxville in beautiful East Tennessee, ORNL is the Department of Energy?s (DOE?s) largest science and energy laboratory, employing a staff of more than 3,900, with funding in FY 2003 exceeding $1 billion for the first time. An international leader in a range of scientific areas that support DOE?s mission, the Laboratory?s six major scientific competencies include neutron science, energy, high performance computing, complex biological systems, advanced materials, and national security.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The NRSS Group Leader is responsible for all aspects of managing a group of 25-30 professionals and technicians who provide nuclear and radiological protection technical services to the research, operations, and support organizations at ORNL. The NRSS Group Leader will also be responsible for leading the technical support and Radiological Protection Program development functions for the Division. The successful candidate must have a strong technical background in health physics principles and demonstrated radiation protection program management experience. The position requires vision and leadership necessary to ensure that the NRSS Group will continue to outpace the evolving challenges of providing exemplary nuclear and radiological protection services to support the ORNL research and operations mission.
The Group Leader will be responsible for providing technical leadership and direction to the following functional program areas:
? Radiological Engineering and Program Support ? Includes radiological engineering expertise that supports ALARA design reviews, operational ALARA planning and review, shielding and dose calculations and radiological optimization. Team members within this group are also field deployed to provide consistent long-term health physics expertise to support operations and research programs. Staff also provides support to the Division and the ORNL as designated Subject Matter Experts in several radiological protection subject areas. They also support program improvement initiatives and participate in assessments, audits, and investigations as required.
? Nuclear and Radiological Protection Systems Support ? Provides systems and radiological protection application development and maintenance support of ORNL radiological and safety activities. Applications include personnel internal and external dosimetry data tracking and reporting, Radiological Work Permit system, electronic personnel dosimeter program, Radiological Event Report trending and tracking, Division web page maintenance, radioactive source control and radioactive material inventory systems, etc. Computer security support for the Division is also provided.
? Radiological Protection Instrumentation and Source Control ? Maintains a comprehensive radiological instrument calibration facility serving ORNL and other organizations within the DOE community by providing high-quality NIST-traceable instrument calibrations, dosimeter exposures, and technical measurements expertise. Safe management of ORNL?s radiation sources (including radiation generating devices) is facilitated by implementing a quality accountability system that covers all radiological aspects of radiation sources from procurement to handling, utilization, storage, transfer, and eventual disposal.
? Radiological Protection Training - A comprehensive Radiological Control Technician (RCT) qualification and training program is maintained and administered. This training makes extensive use of web-based applications and a variety of innovative teaching and learning techniques. This functional area also provides Division-wide training support.
Experience and Education Requirements:
The position requires a Master?s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or a Master?s of Science degree in a related discipline and at least 10 years of related experience beyond the time that the required degree was awarded. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered. At least five years management/supervisory experience within a radiation protection program is required. A thorough knowledge of DOE Orders and directives is desirable; consequently, DOE-related work experience is a valuable plus. It is highly desirable that the candidate be an active American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Certified Health Physicist (Comprehensive).
