Brent:

Of course Beagle's loss was a deplorable loss and the £50 million pertain to it alone. Yet, the Mars Express Orbiter itself pursues a separate independent mission from Beagle. Its impressive photographic mapping is sold as a considerable accomplishment by ESA, and I assume rightly so.

Bets regards, Rainer

£50 million here, £50 million there, next thing you know, we're talking about real money. :>

I wonder if that figure includes the diminished usefulness of the Mars Express Orbiter 'mothership' (which is an ESA initiative). That vessel was reliant on Beagle 2 for much of it's mission.

Brent:

I agree, "sh*t happens" - also in old Europe.

Yet, your example, the "poorly managed Beagle mission" (according to ESA) was a comparatively inexpensive fiasco (£50 million) and it was a British and not a German failure - this time, :-).

Kind regards, Rainer

BTW, as I notice you work for the German Aerospace Center, perhaps you can explain the splendid, deplorable, quite expensive failure of the Beagle 2?
