Job Qualifications
Required: Bachelors degree in environmental, agricultural or natural
resources and two years of experience in a field of
environmental/agricultural sciences or natural resources. Additional
experience in the biological sciences, agricultural sciences, physical
sciences, natural resources, mathematics or engineering may be substituted
for the required education as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred: Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Arts degree with at least
30 semester hours in physical, health, or life sciences or a Bachelors
degree in Radiologic Technology from an accredited college or university.
Attendance at FDA Mammography and diagnostic X-ray inspector training
courses. Attendance at USNRC 'core' courses is desirable. These include but
are not limited to: 5 week health physics course at Oak Ridge; 1 week
courses in industrial radiology, well logging, medical uses of radiation,
license review procedures, inspection procedures, and transportation.
Experience in Health Physics and Radiological health measurements,
radioactive materials handling, and in procedures to use radioactive
material in radiation and high radiation areas.

or performs investigations or inspections of large and complex x-ray
registrants, radioactive materials licensees, asbestos abatement projects
and chemical facilities and makes professional observations and judgments
necessary to identify adverse health and welfare effects. Determines the
need for, and arranges for, the collection of biological samples, analyzes
results, and makes recommendations for enforcement action to ensure
compliance with state and federal regulations. Supervises or independently
carries out field and office studies, and makes professional observations
and judgments, necessary to identify and recommend solutions for unusual
and complex technical problems associated with the development and
operation of complex x-ray registrants, radioactive materials licensees,
asbestos abatement projects and chemical facilities. Provides technical
assistance to the Environmental Scientist V and Section Environmental
Scientist IV's in supervising, planning, organizing, coordinating,
directing, and reviewing activities of staff of the individual units.
Monitors and provides professional recommendations on specific federal,
state or local laws, regulations and policies pertaining to regulated
activities. Prepares regulations, licensing guides and information for
licensees/registrants; and special projects as assigned by supervision.

inspector positions: Perform on-site inspections of large and complex x-ray
registrants to determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal and
storage of x-ray producing equipment One radioactive material license
inspector position: Perform on-site inspections of radioactive materials
licensees to determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal and
storage of radioactive materials. Review radioactive materials license
application and amendment requests and obtain necessary clarification
needed for final evaluation of applications. Prepare license documents for
issuance or written recommendations for denial. One emergency
planning/environmental monitoring position: Responsible for the
development, revision, and maintenance of agency radiological emergency
response plans and procedures for emergency response to radiological
incidents and emergencies caused by terrorism acts and/or transportation
accidents. Responsible for the planning and organization of emergency
response drills and exercises for radiological terrorism and/or
transportation incidents. Maintain familiarity with the radiological
environmental monitoring program, perform field monitoring/sampling work in
support of this program.
