Came across a short note today on a study comparing death rates of UK Gulf
Veterans against a comparison group consisting of 53,143 UK Armed Forces
personnel of similar age, gender, Service, regular/reservist status and rank who
were in Service on 1 January 1991 but did not deploy to the Gulf.

This notice contained the following conclusions:

    * There were 784 deaths among the Gulf veterans up to the 30 June 2006
and 818 deaths in the Era comparison group, representing increases of 29 and
34 respectively since the last release in January 2006, resulting in an
estimate of 796 deaths in the age-adjusted Era comparison group.

    * The 784 deaths among Gulf veterans compare with approximately 1,265
deaths which would have been expected in a similar sized cohort taken from the
general population of the UK with the same age and gender profile.

    * There were no statistically significant differences overall or in
any of the cause groups analysed between the Gulf veterans and the Era
comparison group.

P.S. does anyone know of a similar study being undertaken on US veterans?
