AW: [ RadSafe ] Obit for Charlie Steen, the uranium king

Franz,
You are correct, that piece was in the newspaper as a general public
type of article, and not meant to be detailed about the industry, or
Charlie's rise and fall.
That has been documented in the Denver and Salt Lake City papers over
the years.

Charlie was not directly involved with the Atlas uranium mill at Moab,
at least not in later years, to my knowledge.
I am not directly involved with Moab, but here is my understanding of
the status:

The Atlas mill site was transferred from NRC oversight to the DOE some
years back (it was transferred from Title II of UMTRA to Title I). This
allows for DOE funds (i.e., taxpayer funds) to be used to clean up the
site, since the licensee did not have sufficient funds, and NRC had
woefully insufficient surety in place for the site. The DOE Grand
Junction Office is in charge of the Moab project. The State of Utah is
now an Agreement State with respect to uranium recovery.

There have been the necessary studies under the DOE paradigm, and a
location has been chosen for construction of the disposal cell. This
will be at Crescent Junction, which is north of Moab (along Interstate
70). Rail lines are available in the area, so the tailings most likely
will be transported by rail, which will keep truck traffic down on the
highway.

Stay tuned,

Dear Phil,

being almost a frequent visitor to the South-West and especially to
Moab I
think that this article seems to be directed to "the general public",
since
it gives hardly any facts and reasons for both Steen's rise nor fall.
Is he
associated with the uranium-plant in Moab, which resulted in the
Moab-tailings, so much offended during the last ten years or so?

What is the status on the Moab-tailings, I have since long not heard
anything about it, but did not really search actively for news.

Best regards,
Franz
