[ RadSafe ] Portal Monitors *UPDATE*

Gamma 60's were last made by THERMO-FISHER. They still maintain them up to a
point. Certain key parts are no longer available.
A list of those unavailable parts can be obtained from Thermo.

At the time of their discontinuance, the direct replacement was the PM-7.
Now the PM-7 is being replaced by the PM-12.

Not just an evolutionary change but a revolutionary one.

In the words of Jim Menge, Thermo engineer attached to sales (
717-949-8123), who was kind enough to bring me up to date on the technology
of
today's product: " The Pm-12 is brining the walk through Portal Monitor
into the 21st century". Naturally the new processing equipment is much more
advanced in hardware, software, and connectivity, but sensor topology and
manufacturing techniques improvements have produced startling improvements
too.

My thanks to Mr. Menge jim.menge at thermofisher.com for spending his valuable
time with me on the telephone this morning, and to
the listmembers who helped me gather further information.

Delivery of the new PM-12's will begin in Feb. 2008.

Contact Mr. Menge for a data sheet on the PM-12 or I can forward one to any
listmember.

If you contact Thermo on this or any other subject, be sure to check out the
SAM-12 and the remarkable little RadEye series product too.

PS any listmember's facility who is replacing/scrapping the GAMMA 60's,
contact me as I am
most interested in recycling the sensors from them to school lab service.

Note: I am not connected to Thermo or any manufacturer in any way.

Subject: [ RadSafe ] Portal Monitors

Dear RadSafers --
I am in search of information concerning portal monitors capable of
detecting gamma radiation from nuclides that decay via EC; therefore
traditional gas flow proportional detectors are not appropriate. At our
facility we have older "Gamma 60" units with plastic scintillation
detectors that were manufactured by National Nuclear Corporation.
However, parts for these units have become increasingly difficult to
find.

If anyone has recommendations on available systems to supplement or
replace our existing units please contact me. I would also be
interested in any positive or negative experiences that folks have had
with specific manufacturer's units.

Thank you.
