Here is Norman Augustine's quote with another sentence for some
context.
"If history teaches any lesson it is that no nation has an
inherent right to greatness. Greatness has to be earned and continually
re-earned. Only by providing leading-edge human capital and knowledge
capital can America continue to maintain a high standard of living -
including providing national security - for its citizens."
You can read it at this link:

follow the quote will provide some worthwhile reading.
Norman Augustine was the chairman of the National Academies'
Committee that wrote "Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century"
and is the retired Chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin. My thanks to John
Jacobus for posting this quote, and to Franz Schonhofer for kicking up a
fuss about it. The fuss prompted me to investigate and learn something useful.
I see nothing objectionable in the quote about greatness. In
fact, I would say that greatness is much like respect --- it must be earned
and re-earned. As far as "fascist ideologist" is concerned . . . . My
guess is that Stalin considered the Soviet Union to be a great
nation. Does that mean Stalin was a fascist ideologist?
