I am forwarding the contents of an email received recently. Is there
anyone on this list able to attend? It will hopefully provide answers
to some of the questions that have been raised on radsafe, and likely
create a few more.

Polonium-210: The public health response
Date: Tuesday 27 March
Venue: Royal College of Surgeons of England, London
Website: www.hpa-events.org.uk/Polonium
We would like to let you know that the Health Protection Agency is
convening a one day conference in London, on Tuesday 27 March, to share
its experience in dealing with the Polonium-210 incident.

The death of Alexander Litvinenko from radiation poisoning, and the risk
that members of the public might have been exposed to radiation, was an
unprecedented event in the UK. The Health Protection Agency's response
to the incident brought together specialists from a wide range of fields
in an integrated national effort. The aftermath of the incident lasted
many weeks and required the Agency's response to be sustainable.

The conference sessions will tell the public health story of the
incident and how people were tested, places were monitored and risks
were assessed. They will tell the risk communication story including how
complex information was put into the public domain. The international
side of the story will also be told - how rapid worldwide contacts were
established to ensure every step was taken to protect the health of the
public. The conference is intended for all those involved in planning
for and responding to national emergencies, who may benefit from lessons
learnt from this incident.

Early information about the event and details of how to book a place can
be found on the conference website - www.hpa-events.org.uk/Polonium If
you could kindly disseminate this information to colleagues in your
organisation we would be very grateful.

We hope you may be able to attend - if you or your colleagues have
questions about the event, please send an email to events at hpa.org.uk
