[ RadSafe ] World's Biggest Wind Park -Capacity Factor vs. Nu clear

It seems that a growing number of suburban municipalities are passing local
ordnances which prohibit the construction of new cell telephone towers,
unless they are disguised as conifer or palm trees.

I had no idea that conifer trees of the species "Metallicus pinus var.
celltowerabscondium" were becoming so popular.
( see also "Artificae Plantae: The taxonomy, ecology, and ethnobotany of the
Simulacraceae," at
http://www.ethnobotanyjournal.org/vol5/I1547-3465-05-159.pdf )

I posted a few photos on the Garden Web conifers forum.....
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/conif/msg0721133423131.html?1

It made me wonder whether similar ordnances will also be passed to require
windmills to be disguised as well.

This might be a bit more difficult.

To achieve the desired effect, the new "Metallicus pinus var.
windmillabscondium" would need to be "multi-trunked" at the top, with a
central "trunk" supporting the generator cab and rotating blades, sandwiched
between the other two "trunks," the latter two having sufficiently large
foliage crowns to hide the middle part.

This would undoubtedly reduce the windmill's efficiency and capacity factor
(CF) somewhat, but these are already so low (annual CF typically <30%), that
it wouldn't make much difference.

But most importantly, we could still maintain our "green" image, by building
lots of windmills, without polluting the landscape with hundreds of
industrial-looking towers.

Surely if people can't tolerate a single cell tower, then dozens of
un-disguised windmills are totally unacceptable!

Cheers,

Jaro

Subject: [ RadSafe ] World's Biggest Wind Park -Capacity Factor vs. Nuclear

      Hi,
An interesting note and link [below my signature], regarding a
proposed 1,500 MW[e] windmill complex in Norway for an alternate energy,
non-fossil, non-nuclear power generation source. As announced, the
Norwegians will be investing $2.4 billion [US]. The article states that they
hope to realize 13.14 terawatt hours of generation per year.

This hoped for generation from this windfarm, supposedly the largest
in the world, would yield a capacity factor of 32% if they meet their
target vs. nuclear plants realizing capacity factors on average of well over
80%. Even at 80% capacity assumed for a nuclear plant, the capacity of
windmills to equal the output would have to be 2.5 times higher [at a
minimum] .

Thus an installed capacity of this windmill complex at 1,500 MW[e]
would equal the actual output per year of a 600 MW[e] nuclear plant [at 80%
capacity]. This important point about capacity factors of one option [wind]
being so much less than nuclear has to be considered in judging alternatives
vs. an economic comparison for construction and whether the costs of overall
operations of one vs. the other [including the staff and rad protection
activities for nuclear] makes continued operation of installed nuclear
capacity and the construction of new capacity a wise and justifiable
investment for a society.
