Was the plane a DC-3 or the military equivalent, the
C-47.

>From "Lend-lease: Aircraft Deliveries to the Soviet
Union" at
http://lend-lease.airforce.ru/english/articles/geust/aircraft_deliveries.htm

"Some American aircraft types were simply
irreplaceable and very highly appreciated on all
levels during the war, e.g. P-39 Airacobra fighters,
A-20 Boston and B-25 Mitchell bombers and C-47
transport aircraft."

As noted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-3

"During World War II, many civilian DC-3s were drafted
for the war effort and nearly 10,000 military versions
of the DC-3 were built, under the designations C-47,
C-53, R4D and Dakota."

“We must face the fact that the United States is neither omnipotent or omniscient — that we are only 6 percent of the world’s population; that we cannot impose our will upon the other 94 percent of mankind; that we cannot right every wrong or reverse each adversity; and therefore there cannot be an American solution to every world problem.”
