As you appreciate, there is little effect for a continuous process with lags of a few months or even years.
It makes more sense to tuen it around. What the corn sucks up this summer, is being burned/released in a few weeks or months.
There's no net carbon on the time scales of interest.
Coal OTOH, is introducing CO2 that was "sequestered" (in the current vernacular :-) millions of years ago.
We've burned enough coal, oil and gas to have substantially diluted the secular equilibrium (balance between production rate and decay/removal rate) of the C-14 in the atmosphere, releasing the "old" carbon in which the C-14 has been depleted.

This may not be strictly true because:
(a) If the biomass is not replaced, then there is a net increase in the CO2
and also a decrease in the sink (i.e., rain forest).
(b) the chemical and biological kinetics of the new growth may lag behind
the production rate for a while.
