I don't know if atomic spectra are any more easily resolved than nuclear
spectra. There may be some utility for atomic spectroscopy to help
discriminate in the field between suspected nuclides of different elements
when gamma spec results are ambiguous. NaI based hand-held gamma spec
units are notorious for mis-identifying isotopes, especially in the hands
of non-HPs. Of course if we give cops and customs agents any more
instruments to carry they won't be able to stand up.
