[ RadSafe ] The "Nucular" debate

Hi -

According to the Nucular Wiki entry, U.S. presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower,
Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush have all used this pronunciation. But I
distinctly remember that Jimmy Carter had his own way with nucular and I
think that Lyndon Johnson often replaced "nuclear" with "atomic" perhaps
because of it's easier pronunciation. Since he was from Texas, he might
have encountered the same patterns of dialect as Bush, Carter and Clinton.

And I've been calling it Wooster Sauce all these long years thinking that I
was cheating! Of course there is always Magdalen College (pronounced
"maudlin") at Oxford.

But these differences in English are but a shadow of the differences in
German dialects. As Franz can attest for Austrian German, the difference
between Schoenbrunner (High) German and Styrian German is not only vast but
often incomprehensible. Think of all of the Americanisms that Styrian-born
Arnold Schwarzenegger has introduced to the English language starting with
the name of California.

Oops: folk-sell IS the correct (marine) pronunciation for forecastle!

As is "Wooster" for Worcestershire. The "Queens" English can be funny at
times!

Dan, et.al. One of my favorites is "forecastle", pronounced "folk-sell".
Another is the city of "bum-in-ham".

Actually, I believe it comes more from Texas, as in San An-ton-ya (San
Antonio) or La-ray-da (Laredo). Been there, heard it said.....said it,
too.
