Roger,

among the numerous (or rather innumerable) comments pertinent to this - admittedly gifted - charlatanry I would address the two most fundamental misconceptions upon which this botch is built.

Number one (p.22): "It's all about the DNA" transports the misconception of a one-to-one relation between DNA-damage and health detriment. Apart from concealing the fact, that such damages occur all the time due to the normal metabolic activity of a cell in uncountable numbers, it reflects a misconception still pervading biological thinking.

In his most fascinating book: Life's solution. Cambridge University Press, 2003, the eminent biologist/palaeontologist Simon Conway Morris classified this dogma as a serious obstacle to the advancement of biological sciences.

"Claims for the primacy of the gene have distorted the whole of biology, ...." (p. 238)

In a most recent paper in Nature, advanced online edition, 

Alternative isoform regulation in human tissue transcriptomes.

Eric T. Wang, Rickard Sandberg, Shujun Luo, Irina Khrebtukova, Lu Zhang, Christine Mayr, Stephen F. Kingsmore, Gary P. Schroth & Christopher B. Burge demonstrate how unfounded such a single/simple minded approach to biology really is. It reminds me of the title of a commentary in Science already in the mid 1970s which in a context of genetic control raised the question: "Who controls the controller?" 

Number two (p. 24): "The main government scientific body concerning radiation and human health, known as the BEIR committee VII confirmed -- AGAIN - the LNT (Linear, No Threshold) theory, ...".

They combine to establish the 'cantus firmus' of radiation activists: "No level of radiation exposure - regardless how small - is safe." 

Both these fundamental delusions, "It's all about the DNA" and "LNT is a confirmed theory" in my view places the major blame for the influence which Hoffman and his ilk can wield on the scientific community which either deliberately (i.e. selfishly) or carelessly provides such activists the essential ammunition they need to scare - i.e. to manipulate - the unsuspecting public. Unless the scientific community learns to communicate the true state of its current knowledge more accurately and more restrained, no appeal to political decision makers will be able to counteract the efficacy of such indoctrination.

This is getting very widespread exposure; I expect that Rob Kall's OpEdNews, which has wide internet readership, will put this out as it has all of other Garger "columns".  The writer, Hoffman, is known for playing fast and loose with science and baffling the reader with materials that he purports to be fact.  Since he has sent this to 75 Members of Congress, you can expect that this very biased and unscientific presentation of all things radioactive and nuclear will receive prominence that it does not deserve.  Please, feel free to comment, not just to this list, but to your local papers and other media and perhaps confront Hoffman should he choose to go on tour.  Garger has begun touring, setting herself up as a radiation and particularly depleted uranium expert.  The regular posting of her unedited and thus not fact checked materials by OpEdNews has already given Garger prominence that she does not deserve.  I would hope that you RADSAFE readers will realize that these fanatic amateurs and non-scientists are guiding public policy .  Thank you.

Russell "Ace" Hoffman tells it to us straight in this easy to read and understand, new colorfully illustrated book about all-things-nuclear and radiological, from nuclear reactors to Uranium weapons and bombs.
