Radsafers:

I'd like to get the general consensus on typical instrument pre-use checks
that other sites/institutions complete.

This is aimed at the portable Radiation Protection Instruments that a
typical RP tech would use in the field. I.e. Ludlum 44-9 (pancake) or 43-5
(alpha). My interest is the pre-use source check. My belief is that an
instrument should be checked daily (even shiftly) against a source of known
activity to ensure a response to within a known range. This provides the
tech with confidence the inst is functioning as it should.

My previous background was the UK, I've since moved overseas and am baffled
by the regime I've witnessed. I'm interested to see if this is something
specific to North America. Any advice on the associated regulatory
requirements would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Ross
