Dan,
  this might not be relevant, but it was interesting and might touch on the subject you are looking at.  Dr. Kitto did some testing with the granite slabs on the porosity of granite to the Radon.  He took a known high exhalation rate granite, then placed another known low emanation rate granite on top, then placed the Radon detector on top with a chamber over the meter.
   
  Supposedly, the Radon came right through the low emitting slab.
   
  If true, it is not what I would have expected.
   
  I know, don't speculate :-)
