[ RadSafe ] Consideration of the Nuclear Option

Dear RadSafers:

Russia laid the foundation for this new wave of nuclear power generation in
Eastern and Central Europe with the cut-off of all natural gas from Russia
11 months ago.  Because of the absolute requirement for highly-reliable
power sources, I believe that governments and policy-makers in Europe must
re-think their power strategies for the future. The reliability of nuclear
power is unchallenged in the world because it removes the vulnerability of
supply interruptions.  The low cost of the "front-end" of the nuclear fuel
cycle will continue for the foreseeable future.

It is not clear to me, who sent this e-mail, but let me tell you, that I
have been recently about ten days in Hungary, holding seminars about
radioactivity issues at the University of Veszprem and the University of
Budapest. It was a terrible work for me to prepare the seminars, but I think
it payed off: Not only the surprisingly large audience of students, but also
people from several authorities attended the seminars, which lasted for a
long time, because when asking the audience in late afternoon, whether I
should stop I received the clear message "No, please go on!" I appreciate
the open minded students, their professors and the authorities for that. 

After those seminars I attended the ALMERA meeting in Budapest - ALMERA
being an excellent programme of the IAEA for proficiency tests, but it is
more or less restricted to laboratories nominated by the national
authorities. A part of the meeting was held at Paks in the (only) Hungarian
nuclear power plant (two WWER 400). 

The Hungarian Parliament has recently agreed to build two more nuclear units
in Paks, the type not yet specified, but with a much higher output than the
existing reactors. 

This is not unique in Europe. Besides the fact that Finland has already
started to build a new NPP there are very concrete plans, partly already
agreed by national legislation in e.g. Slovakia, Czech Republic, and others.
What I got to know in Budapest is, that one of the Cernovoda CANDU reactors
in Romania is to be connected to the grid soon and the fourth one is close
to be completed. This is just a rough overview - there is more going on in
Europe. 

I wait for the moment, when I receive on RADSAFE the message, that
construction (not groundbreaking!) of a new power reactor in the USA has
started!

Maybe Syd Levine will regard this message as provocative and "anti-US" (as
usual), but I do not care. I ignore another person, who acts as a troll on
RADSAFE and questions my PhD.

welcome.
