OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - 
Jim Turner, of Oak Ridge, passed away Dec. 29, 2008, to be with our Lord.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Renate Gerike Turner; mother, Leslie
Kuck Turner; and older sisters, Cleve Cone and Leslie Hart.

He is survived by his three children, Tom Turner of Los Alamos, N.M., Susan
Vaughan of Longmont, Colo., and Bill Turner of Knoxville, Tenn. Among their
three families the grandkid count totals nine and one additional
great-grandson.

Jim was born in Norfolk, Va., on Feb. 12, 1930. His childhood years were
spent growing up in Savannah, Ga. Jim had three loves: Renate, health
physics, and tennis.  Renate passed just before their 50th wedding
anniversary in 2005. Thirty- five years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
including recognition as a Corporate Fellow there marked a distinguished
health physics career. His undergraduate years were spent at Armstrong
College and Emory University. He earned a master's degree at Harvard. As a
second-wave Fulbright student, in Gottingen, Germany, he met Renate on a
Valentine's Day blind date. He earned a Ph.D. in physics at Vanderbilt. As a
well-known health physics authority he authored several books and graduate
level textbooks on the subject; he is author or co-author on over 400
scientific papers.

Jim's third passion was tennis. He could be found daily on the tennis courts
yearround. He played until October 2007 when he was diagnosed with cancer.
We are sad at his passing, but thank God that he was a good father to us
kids. He will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak
Ridge Turnpike, on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stella
Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10
until 11 a.m. prior to the service. The body has been cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Keystone Elder
Day Center, which is located at the First United Methodist Church. Jim and
Renate were strong supporters of Keystone.

Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. An online guest book may
be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.

Only by persistent persuasion that <100mSv actually helps PROTECT against cancer (hormesis, as with allergy shots)
will we relieve these false fears, I believe.
