Hi Franz,

When I visited the CHUM installations in June, the Cyberknive was being installed. I am not a specialist in radio-oncology, but I can tell you what the people there explained to us during the visit. It's main intended is non operable brain and spine tumors, very precise beam placement being a great advantage. Beams from the cyberknife can be aimed from all 3D, not only 360 degrees. Treatment time is also much reduced when compared to traditional radiotherapy.

Colette,

Comprehensive and I hope accurate information and numbers about the
distribution of Cyberknives throughout the world can be found on Google,
using "cyberknives" for search. I have to admit, that though being
interested in these topics I had no idea that linear accelerators were used
for radiochirurgical purposes. The advantage is quite clear: As soon as you
switch off the electricity there is no radiation! It was stated on
Wikipedia, that no advantage could be found over conventional radiation
therapy. Is there anything in this direction that RADSAFErs could comment
on?

Best regards

Franz

What about Cyberknives? There is one at the CHUM hospital in Montreal.

The google list at:
http://www.elekta.com/patient_us_leksell_gamma_knife_centers.php#USA
shows 93 locations in the US. That same site does total 3 in Canada.
Best,
