"The National Transportation Safety Board report (supported by the FAA,
the FBI, Boeing, and the USCG) concluded that the "probable cause of the
EgyptAir flight 990 accident is the aircraft's departure from normal
cruise flight and subsequent impact with the Atlantic Ocean as a result of
the relief first officer's flight control inputs. The reason for the
relief first officer's actions was not determined." Many believe that the
aircraft was deliberately crashed as a suicide given the evidence provided
in the NTSB report and the relief first officer's repeating of "I rely on
God", but the pilot's actual motivation for his control inputs is not
known."

Interesting that steering a plane in a manner that brings it down is
called "inputs" An employee from my company was killed on that flight.

It just seems that the TSA caved on pilots, as it was serving as a lever
for anti-screening advocates. There are just as many reasons to screen
pilots and other crew members as anyone else. I feel that the new
screening isn't probably that effective of a deterrent and there are other
technologies (and low tech solutions) which are better for detecting
explosives and insidious behaviors.

Can anyone tell me if your underwear is made from explosive cloth (like a
previous bomber) - how one of these units would detect such? - its merely
an image and if the explosive is of comparable density - its not going to
show.

Two points:

1) Many things were reported on 9/11 that turned out not to be true (and
indeed, many things continue to circulate that have been debunked). If
someone is going to claim that some of the hijackers were dressed as
pilots (which certainly was possible) I would expect them to be able to
point to evidence to support it.

2) The new rules for pilots require them to produce two pieces of ID,
one government issued and one airlines issued (I believe both need to be
picture IDs). I believe the IDs are then going to be checked against a
database that will verify not only that the person is a pilot, but that
they are scheduled to fly from that airport that day.

It is not possible to stop an attack by a very well organized group with
unlimited resources. It is, however, possible to make it more
difficult, and thus prevent and deter less sophisticated attacks. We
still have a fair amount of low hanging fruit available, as the
underwear bomber demonstrated.

HUHHHHHHHHHHHH?????
They didn't check pilots then, and we all know what happened, so we
aren't
going to check them now again?

I need a full explanation of this line of thought!

Of course everything as we know it was different the morning of 9/11.
Apples and oranges today.

I feel safe now.

Oh except for one thing: on 9/11, at least one hijacker in each crew was

dressed as a pilot, and actually invited into the cockpit to witness
takeoff, from the jump seat. This was reported only once or twice in the

early morning hours of 9/11.
