Lidia - you also need the density of the elements plus the X-ray energies.

There is software on the market that helps with these calculations. Microshield is one that can be used if the source is composed of radionuclides rather than generating devices or if theX-ray energies are known.

Lidia,
If you can determine the elemental composition using X-ray spectroscopy, you
ould calculate the coefficient for each sample. X-ray spec could give you what
s in the sample, but not what the sample "looks like" inside.

ubject: [ RadSafe ] Linear attenuation coefficient for biological ashes
Dear all,
I am looking for the linear attenuation coefficient of X-rays in ashes. I
hecked the NIST database http://physics.nist.gov/PhysRefData/XrayMassCoef/tab4.html
but there is no such material included.
Does anyone have a suggestion of where to find data for biological ashes?
Rgds
Lidia Silva
