Description
This position performs duties within the field of Health Physics to support the Environmental Health Program at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Cape Canaveral Air force Station (CCAFS) and Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB). Requires knowledge in the field of Health Physics, including ionizing and non-ionizing radiation hazards and the identification, evaluation and control of such hazards. The position must be able to independently recognize and evaluate health hazards and recommend corrective actions. Must understand the use and operation of various types of radiation detection instruments. Position ensures compliance with specific Federal, NASA, or Air Force regulations and program or contractual requirements to preserve the health and safety of persons within the KSC/CCAFS/PAFB environment, working within the limits of standard or accepted practice.


*         Perform comprehensive health physics surveys to include ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources.

*         Conduct radiation source inventories.

*         Perform radiation equipment calibrations, monitor personnel potential exposure, through the use of radiation dosimeters.

*         Maintain full knowledge of related program and regulatory requirements.

*         Respond to incidents and emergency situations within area of expertise/qualifications and work within standard operation procedures or as directed to protect and preserve the health and safety of persons in the area, and to reduce the exposure and impact.

*         Conduct interviews and prepare related reports. Perform any range of administrative duties required to fulfill program or contractual requirements related to designated area of health physics, including record keeping, inventory maintenance, supply requisition, database maintenance and similar duties as assigned.

*         Perform any range of program related launch support activities.

*         Prepare and set-up, calibrate and operate various health physics and health physics support equipment.

*         Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Demands of work assignments require some physical exertion such as climbing, walking, stooping, as well as, other more specific, but common, characteristics such as use of personal protective equipment. Use of personal protective equipment to include respiratory protection, SCBA, and fully encapsulated suits is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science and NRRPT registration preferred. Associate degree in science disciplines required. A minimum of one year of experience is required. Four to six years experience in comprehensive health physics is preferred.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Requires the ability to read and interpret written information and effectively communicate verbally, and in writing, where information includes scientific terminology.

Must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible for a secret clearance.

Requires the ability to independently access terrain, climb stairs, and ladders, work at heights of greater than twelve feet. Must not be claustrophobic or afraid of heights.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively are required.

Must be familiar with Microsoft Office Programs.


Working Conditions:

Must thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees. General office environment may require minor lifting and bending.

Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures. Participates in and supports the MESC Safety program. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Identifies and reports potential safety hazards, concerns and safety incidents to supervisory personnel.
