Hello,
This note is directed to American Physical Society members.
A Topical Group on Climate Change is forming and will address issues of
interest to the Health Physics Community including radiation transport, data
evaluation of oxygen isotopes, and modeling of systems including the
interaction of radiation with matter. As part of the process that led to the
formation of this topical group, I have raised issues related to the influence
of solar radiation and the interaction of particulate radiation on
atmospheric gases and radiation transport. There are numerous other aspects of
climate that involve the health physics field. If you are an APS member,
please consider forwarding an email to Roger Cohen (_RogerWCohen at comcast.net_
(mailto:RogerWCohen at comcast.net) ) indicating your interest in the Climate
Topical Group.
Supporting information is attached.
Regards,
Joe Bevelacqua

Dear Signatory,
This note asks for your participation in the attached petition to the APS
to form a Topical Group on Climate Physics. The petition includes an
Areas of Interest Statement. I also attach a short review of the results of
the “straw poll” previously sent.
Some additional information:
1. We had initially framed the straw poll as a referendum on a Forum.
We have since learned that a Topical Group is more appropriate than a
Forum for the purposes outlined in the Areas of Interest; i.e., a focus on
issues of science, while avoiding policy and policy implications. Also a
Topical Group has the potential to evolve to Division status.
2. We need 200 petitioners to nucleate the Topical Group. Therefore
your participation is critical to help us get underway.
3. This petition is available only to current members.
4. The petition will be presented in accordance with Article 8,
Section 1 of the APS Constitution
_http://aps.org/about/governance/constitution.cfm_ (http://aps.org/about/governance/constitution.cfm) . Signing the
petition does not obligate you to enroll in the Topical Group. The enrollment
phase follows Council approval and must reach 200 in order for the Group to
become active.
5. We visualize the Group as comprised of members who share an
interest in the science and progressing to the best answers we can get, wherever
they lead, and regardless of current belief. It remains to be seen
whether this is ultimately achievable. Beginning with the signatory group seems
reasonable; while views on the science are rather diverse, all share a
common concern for the integrity of the science.
6. The Areas of Interest Statement is deliberately specific about the
scientific focus areas. This is intended to help support the goals
outlined in the Statement and in Number 5 above. You may have preferred to
include different or additional areas, but please hold off on any suggestions
for now, so that we can move forward with dispatch. There will be a process
for modifying the areas.
7. The current list of 266 signatories is attached.
Any simple affirmative email reply to this note will be sufficient to
enroll in the petition.
I hope that you can join us in this next natural step to bring science
back to the APS’s activities in the climate area.
Sincerely,
Roger
