TSA can also find many more true radiation experts to counter such claims, it is 
obviously a PR failure for not engaging the public ahead of time.

Can a health physicist really take this neurosurgeon seriously as a radiation 
expert when he also says that gold near the radiation increases the risk 100 
fold?

It seems that it is possible to find an MD somewhere who will say almost 
anything about radiation.
