All,

8 September, I had the opportunity to take part in a seminar/discussion
presented by the Canadian Nuclear Society, at Atomic Energy of Canada's
Sheridan Park, on the same subject. The focus was on CANDU used fuel, however,
rather than referring to it as "waste," it was presented as a $36 trillion
energy resource.

Most "spent" fuel contains > 80% uranium and transuranic actinides (in the
case of CANDU used fuel, the number is around 99%). The speaker presented the
physics case for developing a fleet of fast-neutron reactors based on the US
Experimental Breeder Reactor - II (EBR-II) for deep burns of uranium with
transuranic actinides; the energy potential of the "nuclear waste" was
impressive.

Collaboration and cooperation between governments and nuclear industries
worldwide, could go a long way to turning "waste" into "resource." Not burying
nuclear waste could be beneficial in the near-to-intermediate term.

Best regards,
