The NIST Radiation Safety Division in Gaithersburg, MD has vacancies for Health Physicist positions (salary range of $62k to $136k).  These positions require the performance of professional work in the protection of personnel from the hazards of ionizing radiation and the application of professional knowledge and competence in radiation safety and regulatory compliance programs supporting a broadscope materials and research reactor license.
Functions and duties include radiological surveys, radioactive material handling and control, dosimetry, radioanalysis, radiation-producing equipment surveys (including a 20 MW research reactor, linear accelerators, and x-ray devices) . Some positions may include technical oversight of Physical Science Technicians.
The incumbent provides technical support within radiation protection programs oversight and development; conducts hazard analysis of sealed and unsealed radioactive material utilization; uses instrumentation and survey techniques to perform radiation survey evaluations; collects and assists in the analysis of data; conducts quality assurance on radiological instrumentation; maintains records on radiation levels and personnel exposures; participates in such activities as instrument maintenance and calibration, decontamination, processing of radioactive material for waste disposal, and training.

The positions require experience with, and a working knowledge of, NRC, DOT, EPA, OSHA regulations and procedures applicable to the safe use of radioactive material in a broadscope materials program.
