Gary,
I don't know what kind of personal auto Insurance you have in the states, but in the fine print
of some policies in Canada, they do not cover the transportation of radioactive material (with
the definition of radioactive material very open to interpretation by insurance lawyers). In the
case that you were to get into an accident, and it was discovered that you were transporting
radioactive material, you may be liable.
At our station, we use either our internal shipping department or approved couriers for all
radioactive shipments, as they have all the legalities worked out.
It's a low probability, but thought I would warn you nonetheless...

Gary: This may be a day late and a dollar short, however I did run this question by our
shipping guy. Below is his answer.
Dewey,
Per our discussion this morning, I ran the source through Ramship as both normal and
special form. Both scenarios have the source packaged as UN2910 Limited Quantity. As we
talked about this morning, the kicker would be dose rate on contact having to be less than
0.5 mr/hr.
I would ship this using UPS or Fedex. Actually any common carrier will do that accepts such
materials. I would not drive it myself due to training concerns and such.
Call or email if you have other questions.
