I dug this out of my paper file. My computer record was lost 2 computers back.
Discussions with Professor Field of Iowa suggested he was right - from his viewpoint:

Iowa women were a 1% outlier in the USA lung cancer mortality study, with
only 0.3 standard deviations of inverse association,
( lung cancer mortality vs radon level) 
whereas p = 0.001 for entire USA.
