Sandy --

I agree -- findings of I-131 can be (and were) blown way out of proportion. I'm sure our friends in the KI business can tell us how much business they got as a result of all the hoopla.

Hi Jim,

I was primarily stating that Dr. Kaku was implying more than what the values meant and can be totally blown out of proportion by the media, agitating the public.

Thanks for your detailed report.

Catch you later.

Sandy --

We saw I-131 in our routine environmental monitoring (i.e. air and rain samples) for a couple of weeks. We also saw I-131 in samples of raw milk (from pasture-fed dairies) and in finished milk from 2 major-brand dairies. The concentrations were barely above our detection limits for milk and rain (in the single digit to low double-digit pCi/L range) and in the 5-30 fCi/m3 range in air.

I wouldn't discount a finding of I-131 in milk in or around NYC. If you look at EPA data (and if you have the opportunity to do so, state data) you'll see that I-131 at low levels (about 1/10 of what we saw post-Chernobyl) was pretty prevalent throughout the country for a couple of weeks at the end of March and early April.

We did NOT sample for I-131 in drinking water (or waste water) for the precise reason that you mention -- we don't have adequate background data to tell whether what we're seeing is over and above the "background" from I-131 "processed" through nuclear medicine patients. Our limited data in this area, however, would lead us to conclude that, at least in the Atlanta area, we wouldn't have been able to see a discernable increase of I-131 concentration in water.

Please contact me offline if you have any specific questions.

And, he stated that the dumping in the ocean will cause further issues in
the region. Continues to say there are 4 hotspots in the area around
Fukushima. Also said while there is little dose around the globe from the
airborne contaminants, they even saw a spike in milk in NYC from I-131.
Um, perhaps that could be from the releases from all of the NYC medical
facilities that release their crap (allowable). Next we'll hear the anti's
stating the I-131 came from Indian Point and that is another reason to
shut the units down.

Sandy
