[ RadSafe ] observations on iodized salt

Hi Group:

In Southern Belarus, Gomel Province, there is a geological structure known
as the Gomel Trough, part of the Starobin Potassium-Salt Basin (also known
as the Pripyat Potash Basin).  Devonian salts were deposited which included
NaCl (halite) and KCl (Silvite).  These deposits include both bedded salts
and doming structures (salt domes) since the confining pressure tends to
cause the salt to deform plastically and relieves pressure by moving
upwards.  A deposit of silvite has been mined there for years to produce
potassium for fertilizer.  These features were explored geophysically
(surface EM, seismic) and by drilling because of the potential hydrocarbon
targets.

Because of the relatively good geological characterization of these bedded
salts, I considered them as possible targets for disposal of radioactive
waste as either deep-well injection sites or an engineered repository like
WIPP.

My colleagues from the Sosny Nuclear Labs in Minsk joked that the mine at
Soligorsk (300 km NW of Chernobyl) constituted the highest gamma source in
Southern Belarus, not withstanding the dry and wet deposition of materials
from Chernobyl.

Thank you all for your input.  
You helped most by helping me clarify what I was trying to get to.  I was
talking to some students about NORM and radioisotopes naturally in food and
our bodies.  When the "lite" salt thing came up again from some who had
taken the actual safety class.  I was trying to explain that there were
different types of the same thing with different characteristics--isotopes.
And that these atoms can combine with other atoms to form molecules that
will change how they effect the body-- absorption abilities, etc.  I was
trying to give a good explanation on why the iodized salt in the mix was not
why we didn't get "radiation poisoning" from the potassium-40. (Besides that
it was minuscule).  Looking at the metabolic processes involved will give me
better way to explain. So once again, thank you.
