The underground nuclear event that occurred 40 miles east of Fallon, NV. was part of testing to "calibrating" seismic instrumentation in order to better detect other underground nuclear events and determine the yield (cold war stuff).  

Also, as I recall the investigations by USPHS (EPA) were for nodules on the thyroid and not tumors (I stand self-corrected).
