68 years ago .... right now ....
The sky is laden with C-47 aircraft spewing their loads of parachute
infantry into France several miles inland from the coast of the English
Channel. Other C-47s are feeling the the lurch of their CG-4A gliders
disconnecting from the towlines that brought these cumbersome, silent
aircraft from England to France. The goal of these airborne troops is to
deny movement of German reinforcements to the coast where in a few
hours, masses of American, British, Canadian, and other troops will be
disgorged from landing craft to begin the invasion of France. The Allies
have begun the final chapter in the defeat of the Axis powers in Europe
-- to end WWII in Europe 11 deadly months later.

In the meantime, the US, Germany, and Japan continue their urgent
efforts to devise a workable atomic bomb -- one more of mankind's
ultimate weapons which began a little while ago with clubs .... we do
keep trying.
Cheers,
