Hi,

Just to put the 500Bq/kg food limit in perspective, low sodium "healthy" salt subsitute contanis Potassium and thus K40, Specfic activity is about 433pCi/g or THIRTYTWOtimes the 500Bq/kg limit. Yes I know it's K40 not Cs137 and you don't eat kilograms of salt. but it is a good indication of the scale used in the food limit. Dried Apricots run about 370Bq/kg and the infamous bananas about 90Bq/kg from K40.

Our (the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority) present guidance to people going to Japan is to follow the official advices. The limits for radioactive content in food being sold in Japan is presently comparable to those in most European countries (e.g. 500Bq/kg of 137Cs) and in April, those limits are going to be lowered and there are also quite strict limitation on where it is allowed to grow food within the contaminated areas (on a personal note, not for the person asking you, I would say some of those rules are ridiculous strict) This is personal communication with colleagues that have just been to Japan, sorry to say, I do not have any references.

I got this message in my YouTube account and I have replied to it telling him to take the trip, but I also would like to know how members of this list would reply, especially if we have any Japanese members, and what references that you would provide.

Thanks

Roger Helbig

I noticed you've been posting on videos regarding Fukushima, and I thought I might ask you about this...
I've been planning my trip to Japan for past half year, and I'm actually going there in two weeks.
I really wanted to go, but now after reading a lot about radiation and contamination in the food, I even considered returning my ticket.
Some websites, like safecast.org and a facebook group http://www.facebook.com/Tokyo.Radiation.Levels both seem to be saying that there is no concern about radiation in Tokyo, but there might be some concern about the food.
However, another source http://fukushima-diary.com/ is telling me not to go right now.

Thank you very much for the reply!
