I've heard that it is a 3,000 Ci (111 TBq) Co-60 source.  One could get one's self in trouble pretty quickly with a source that powerful.  If the thieves have the key to the shielding and in their ignorance open it up they could demonstrate the fallacy of the saying, "What you don't know can't hurt you".
