Hi Dewey,
I'm sure that you, I and many others on this list could move it competently. Highly skilled field engieers could do it with some logs and ropes. However the fact that Rob asked for advice, rightly so and I applaud him for asking, indicates that he does not fully understand all the issues. Even the experts get it wrong somtimes, hence my comment on insurance, see http://www.foundshit.com/crane-collapse-basement/
I've done many "dangerous" things in my life, generally with out incident, but have the scars to show when things went wrong. Not so bad if it's just yourself, but if you hurt someone else or damage property, it is hard to defend saving a few hundred dollars.

Robert.

Robert:

This is a dangerous enough move, however personally I would not contract it out if I had competent people available to move it.  Assuming the move path and end location is satisfactory for the load of course.  (I know of at least one incident where a heavy tool monitor was put on a wooden deck.  Tool Monitor 1, deck 0.)

The forklift thing makes it easier to get it close.  Vestil Manufacturing makes some pretty good material handling equipment, their ENH-60 engine crane works pretty good for lifting things at a spot, it has a 3 ton rating with a lift height of about 78-79 inches, something like that, and will go through a 32 inch door.  They also manufacture powered pallet lifters that may fit your need.

My picture would be set the thing on a moving dolly with your forklift, then carefully move it to the end location, then lift it with an engine hoist to get it on the stand.

Greetings All,

We are trying to move a Canberra Model 747 Pb shield into a room and onto its stand and need some advice.  We can get it into the room with a forklift and even set it onto the stand, but must then move it about 8 feet.  We are concerned with moving it while loaded on the stand as it will be top heavy.
We cannot get the forklift into the room.  The unit weighs 3000 lbs and has lifting eyes.

I am sure someone out there has done this and can give some advice.  I would much prefer to lift the device onto the stand once in the room, but am not familiar with small enough portable equipment capable getting into the room through a 36" door and lifting this 3000 lb device.  Another way we could do this is to load it onto the stand with a forklift from outside the room and then "slide" it over about 10 feet.  This does not seem like a very safe way to do this since it is so top heavy.

Perhaps there are lifting devices that can be rented?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yours,

Rob
