There are technologies that enable groundwater isolation.  I think one of
these would be a good remedy in this case, if the reported inflow rate and
problems with contamination are true.  However with the reported volumes of
water, the claim "highly contaminated" might be exaggerated, although even
slightly contaminated water needs to be appropriately managed.
