Bates,
Thank you for your mail, which confirmed that my esteem for the capability
and skills of my US collegues is still justified. As usual it's the
massmedia which spread horror stories, but sadly I have to say that the
"story" of radon was distributed on RADSAFE. which is the reason why I
attributed some credibility to these news.
The question still remains, why socalled "experts" distribute scientific
nonsense, why massmedia or even scientists, like I hope RADSAFErs are,
forward this to a forum of scientists, without any caveat. It seems to me
that in public perception all those wannabe "scientists" like Busby,
Bertell, .... please insert the names of your dozens of favourite pseudo
experts, or of those financially prospering groups like Greenpeace and the
like.
I have no solution for this. Do you have one?
Finally: are there any reliable reports available?
Best wishes!
Franz

Franz,
We know exactly the source of the contamination (which drum), we know
exactly the source of the drum (LANL) and we know exactly the primary
isotope in the contamination (Am 241from WGPu). What is not clear yet, is
what chemical interactions, among the AM-contaminated items in the drum,
caused the drum lid to "pop" and release the contamination into the exhaust
ventilation.

Is this a joke??????? There was talk about radon as an origin of elevated
readings - just another joke! Should I really believe that the US radiation
specialists are not able to determine the source of a contamination? I have
been able with my former laboratory to determine all kind of unknown
contamination from tritium, C-14, Sr-90 on various media. Not to talk about
the Chernobyl fallout, the remains of the nuclear explosions at Mururoa etc.
As well we were extremely active in cases like indoor radon and Po-210.
I know enough US-American collegues - some being even good friends - who are
better than I was in radioanalytics. Anybody able to send a serious comment?
Thanks.
Franz
