Perhaps the 'decline' in group membership is a reflection of those who did not respond to the 'spam' termination messages.
 
I have been getting such messages every week or so for the past several months
The warning is an automatic drop unless there is a response within a short period of time.
 
The current number is likely to be similar to the number of actual readers before the 'decline'
