Description: This full time, permanent position will serve as a Physical Science Technician in the Gaithersburg Radiation Safety Division (GRSD). GRSD provides radiation safety services and regulatory compliance monitoring in support of NIST's mission as a measurement standards and materials research laboratory. GRSD is responsible for radiation safety training, dosimetry, bioassays, radioactive materials inventory, shipping and receiving, effluent and environmental monitoring, laboratory instrumentation maintenance and quality control, contamination monitor and survey instrument calibrations, laboratory surveillance, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Transportation regulatory compliance, incident response, and other duties in support of the NIST radiation safety program.
Specifically, this position works under the supervision of staff health physicists supporting activities in a diverse research and testing environment. This position performs a variety of duties such as, but not limited to, calibration, maintenance and quality assurance of instruments, evaluation of laboratories for radiation safety compliance, radiation dosimetry issuance, radioactive waste collection, collection and analysis of environmental samples, dosimeter calibration and analysis, decontamination of equipment and facilities, emergency response to radiological incidents, and the maintenance of calibration, measurement and quality assurance records.
