Actually, Louis Slotin was exposed on 5/21/46 by the demon core which was later used in Crossroads for Able (7/1/46). That same core also killed Harry Daghlian on 8/21/45. HS-5, 6; R-2 was the third core (after Trinity and Nagasaki). After Able, Baker (underwater shot at Crossroads) so contaminated the lagoon that fish could auto-radiograph from internal contamination. The photo below was used to convince Blandy to abandon tests and turn to recovery. Most of the image is algae consumed by the fish.

Louis Slotin was the only death associated with this accident that occurred during a criticality demonstration. His death wasn't strange, he received 2100R and died 9 days later. The other people in the room received doses of 360, 250, 160, 65, 47 and 37R, but nobody else died from it. I believe one of the others may still be alive.

Hmmmm,
Tickling the Dragon's tail??--- the strange death of Louis Slotkin
--- was a story (true) about the death of Slotkin and others doing a criticality experiment. Whoops.

Derek Muller, Ph.D. in Physics Education, is the host for a PBS documentary program "Uranium: Twisting the Dragon's Tail" debuting in the US next week, July 28 & 29, 10 PM eastern & 9 PM central time. It will be broadcast in France & Germany on July 31 and in his native Australia on Aug. 9, 16, & 23.
Cf. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO57Zm-WNmg for his introduction and trailer for the show.
He is very good on physics and radiation on the short YouTube videos presented under his "Veritasium" program name. He's been to Chernobyl and other radiation hot spots. On these short YouTube videos, I've only noticed one niggly error, viz., stating that 2 Sv is fatal to humans, whereas 4-5 Sv is the usual quoted range for LD50 in untreated humans.
This program could be a valuable and entertaining educational tool for the
public.
He's bad on climate change but has done very little work in that area.
